You have to hear the image if you want to see the story
It was 2018. Sloan had just returned from New Mexico. She was excited because she felt like she had taken some good shots. I knew they must be good because she’s not usually the excitable type. She messaged me some photos. I had looked at about a dozen, when she sent me this one. “Tell me about this one.” I said. She answered, “It’s a Drive-by.” That’s a Sloanism for a shot taken from a moving car. “I was going east, through the canyon, en route to Cloudcroft. I left Alamogordo, drove through La Luz, and then the Canyon, That’s where I took it. What do you think? What should I call it?” Well, it took me all of two seconds to reply, “Kowalski!” Her reply was even quicker! “YES!!!”
Now I never expect anyone to know anything about the obscure cheesy action films that I adored as a teen. (Well, except Billy Jack, you have to know about Billy Jack… but that is for another blog.)
I scratched my head. What? There is no way that she knows what I’m referring to. It’s too obscure. There’s no way that she has seen Vanishing Point, or knows who Kowalski is. But she knew. But when I saw the all-caps “YES!”, I knew that she knew. If you have read this far, I’m thinking you might know too.
So if you know who Super Soul is…If you still kinda want a white 1970 Dodge Challenger (with black interior)…If you still dig chicks on motorcycles… then you know damn good and well who’s coming around that curve any minute. Don’t get in Kowalski’s way.
